| Subject: Painting Blog - Coming back to THE HOBBY (Updated 11/08/2011 Commission Work) Tue Sep 06, 2011 10:12 am | |
| It seems there isnt much hobby that gets discussed on these boards, so I will start a blog of my progess on my return to the gaming scene. For those of you who dont know me, I used to play in a ton of both Warhammer and 40k tournaments. I played every army for Fantasy at some point or another and dabbled a little into 40k. With 8th edition of Fantasy I have all but given up on Warhammer. I know you will probably say that I havent played it enough and that its not all that bad, but its just not my cup of tea. I started playing Warhammer in 5th edition and have seen many version/changes of the game, even the days when the magic system used cards instead of dice. I even had the privilage to playtest 8th with the developers and was not a fan then. So what does this all mean? It means that I miss playing games and the hobby, and want to get back into it. So I am starting a new 40k army and maybe one day I will be interested in giving 8th WFB a try but that is for another blog. I have chosen Salamanders as the army I will be getting back into the tournament scene with, its not the best army out there, and some of you will want to steer me in another direction, but I love the background of the army and Vulkan He'Stan is awesome. This list is looking to be something like this: Vulkan Librarian 5 Asasult Terminators w/Thunder Hammer Storm Shield 10 Tactical Marines w/ Meltagun, Multi-Melta, Power Fist and Razorback w/Twin Las 10 Tactical Marines w/ Meltagun, Multi-Melta, Power Fist and Razorback w/Twin Las Ironclad Dreadnought w/Heavy Flamer, Meltagun and Drop Pod Ironclad Dreadnought w/Heavy Flamer, Meltagun and Drop Pod Land Raider Redeemer w/Multi-Melta That is 1650, I will be building the list to 2000 but that is what I want the core of the army to be. I am not sure on the Razorbacks, the SM codex says you can buy a Razorback or Rhino and if the unit is 10 models then they can have a Drop Pod. So my thought is combat sqaud them in most games, with the Power Fist, Melta and 3 other guys in the Razorback and the Multi-Melta and 4 guys hold an objective. All theory at this point but it sounds good. Let me know what you think and what you think I should add. Here are some shots of the army so far:

| Cool Joe good to see you are coming back into the hobby Scene! I'm thinking about doing the same thing myself. I've been out of it for a few years and I do miss it as well but my time has been scattered horribly lately with various things. I'm planning to start working on my eldar or my Blood angels again in the coming weeks.
GL with finding those multi-meltas. =P

| Joe these models look great. So funny how the hobby is for people, I am the exact opposite I love WHFB and 40k is ok but not my first choice. Are you going to be using custom bases or building your own? Display board on the horizon? | |

| I am still using GW paints, I have some of the Valeo paints, but to be honest they are all pretty much the same. The colors mimic the GW line and they have a wider range with their Model color line, but to each their own. I dont really see an upside to either one. Both are fine to use, and to be honest I still use some of the Apple Barrel paints from the craft store because I like some of the colors. Anything works just need to know what its best for. The GW metallics are the best in the market IMHO, so that is the main reason I stick with GW, that and I am a fanboy | |

| Scoot!! Yeah it will be good to throw dice again.
Troops while always good means more line highlighting for me..... I have another squad unbuilt. It was either going to be another 10 man squad in a razorback or trying to put in a regular Land Radier.
So we will see what happens.

Can't wait to see you at Blob's Park Joe.
I know it is a little late, but if you are doing drop pods, I'd recommend a minimum of 3. That way you can get 2 of your dreads or whatever squads down for an alpha strike first turn.
I like to put at least 4...2 filled with strikers, and 2 filled with troops to sit on objectives. This way if they come down late, it's still a good thing.
Remember you can always deploy and drop empty pods.

| hey keith, it will be good to see you at Blobs too.
And I usually run an odd number of pods for that reason, but in this army I dont mind the one coming down alone. If I think my opponent will be able to easily kill the one I will deploy on the table and drop them empty.
I think I am also going to try a 3 Land Raider army, the new GK will struggle with that much armor on the table and 3 is just nasty for anyone to face.

With 3 will you have enough bodies to bubble wrap them and keep deepstrikers from meltagunning them?

| @Keith, I would only have 20 Tactical Marines and 5 Terminators along with the 2 Dreds. Against a heavy melta army anyone is going to struggle to keep their transports away from getting shot up.
Playtesting will be the only true way to tell.
All that said, if you cant deal with them earlier, the LR's will shred infantry and armor alike.

| My story is pretty similar; I was just getting good at WHFB when 8th came out and now I play 40k.
There are a few minor things I would say about your list. The razorback configuration generally accepted as "best" for marines is the lascannon tl plasma gun. Not only does this give you more firepower on opponents within 24, it also counts as having 2 separate guns for the purposes of having your weapons blown up. Some people do love the twin linked las but that's just the general wisdom.
Also, I think power fists on tac squads are usually not worth the points because the sarge is only getting 2 attacks. With a 5 man combat squad they are even less valuable because it's easier to kill off that one fist when only 4 bodies are blocking it instead of 9. Most Vulcan armies give their tactical squads a combi melta which I heavily recommend. That gives you a second shot on a tank when your melta gun flubs the damage roll!
Good luck! | |

| @S-Low - thanks for the advice, I mainly went for the twin las as I suck at dice rolling but I agree with what you are saying about the Plasma in there.
I think the combi-melta is a must in their and I will have to add it in.

I can't tell you the number of times I wish I had a power fist in a squad. They are good for hitting rhinos and taking down dreadnaughts. If you have 2 groups of 5, at least 1 of the fists should live if hit by 10 enemies.
On a Vulkan army, I would prefer this setup: meltagun, missile launcher, combiflamer and powerfist on the sergeant. You'll need to be able to thin hordes, normally.
But for Joe, he's taking redeemers, so maybe some more melta would be good. Or even plasma, in case a MC gets into his lines.

| The big for me is going to be to playtest the variant lists and see what I am most comfortable with. All the suggestions above are great and I will try them all.
After Blobs Park I will be testing this army out. But since I am not taking it to Blobs there is no hurry.
And being as its my first army back into the tournament scene I am not too upset if I do poor with it. I will be getting used to the game again and from there I can make an army tooled up to be a top contender.

| Ok so finally have another update. This time it is my first of two drop pods. I left the doors open so that there is never a chance of someone being upset. Techinically it is not completely finished but I am going to leave it this way until most of the army is finished. Nothing too special, I want all of my vehicles to be primarly black with Green accents. This will help the guys stand out on the table and display board. The doors will eventually get hazard striping on the inside, but for now its good to play with. I have started work on my first tactical squad and should have the Vet Sgt done in a couple of days. | |

| @Lincoln/Brad - Thanks I have come to find that I hate painting drop pods.
@avatar - No airbursh. My green is done in 5 layers:
Orkhide shade Thraka Green Wash 50/50 Orkhide shade & Snot Green Snot Green Scorpion Green Highlight
For tanks and pods I have to do a couple layers of snot green to get it to cover since the areas are big and flat.

| For Telions face or most human skin I do the following:
Step 1 - Bestial Brown basecoat
Step 2 - 50/50 Bestial Brown & Dwarf Flesh leaving some of Step 1 showing in the recesses
Step 3 - Wash with Devlan, Sepia or Baal Red depending on how you want the shade to be (I used Devlan and Baal red to give him an earthy tan feel)
Step 4- Re-apply Step 2 leaving Step 3 showing in the reccesses
Step 5 - Highlight with Dwarf Flesh covering most of the face and head, leaving some of Step 4 in the reccesses
Step 6 - Highlight cheek bones, lips, forhead and side of head with 50/50 Dwarf Flesh & Elf flesh
